Weber 386002 Q-100 Portable Gas Grill

Weber 386002 Q-100 Portable Gas Grill Review

If portability is paramount, and you want and need a grill that cooks quickly, evenly and adds great taste, look no further. This Weber grill delivers. However, there are a few things to learn about it that will make you a better Weber grill cook. First you must follow the instructions by preheating the grill for 10 minutes. The cast iron grates will be VERY hot and sear the meat with nice dark lines. Do not leave it on the first side for very long though. After it is seared and browned turn the meat over; this will prevent over cooking. Vegetables can be grilled on the sides, and around the outside, of the grates where the temperature is cooler.

The grill is relatively easy to clean, but I recommend (as others did) to line the belly below the grates with aluminum foil to facilitate quick clean-up. Be careful not to line the foil too close to the lighting element or you may have difficulty starting the grill.

I purchased my grill in early summer 2009. The one I bought does NOT have the 14oz. propane bottle bracket. I use 16oz. Coleman propane bottles (.xx each) when we travel and a 17lb. Blue Rhino with adapter hose and fuel gauge when at home. The 16oz. bottle lasts for about 4 meals when cooking for 4 people.

The only warning I have for you is that when you remove the grates from the grill be careful. With a full 16oz. propane bottle attached the grill will try to tip over backwards. I was startled and grabbed it in time before it fell. (I read somewhere that Weber originally put on the 14oz. bracket so that the 16oz. bottles could not be used thereby preventing tip-over. The public outcry was so great regarding the necessity to use the 14 oz. bottles that Weber removed the bracket on later versions of the grill.)

This grill is so efficient that I am at a loss when using my large charcoal grill. I have to learn how to grill the hard way all over again when entertaining and cooking for a crowd.

By the way, now is the best time to purchase this grill, because during the grilling season the price goes way up. Oh, the plastic trays that attach to the sides, and the nifty tools that fit into them for travel, are VERY convenient and helpful. I also bought the small Weber Q-100 cover for traveling with the grill. It covers the body of the unit to keep everything else traveling with it clean, and it is easy to put on, remove and wipe clean. I purchased the rolling cart also, and it has been a fantastic accessory. Perfect height for grilling, I use it at home and when traveling. For our porch I bought the full cover, made for the Q-200, to reach to the ground and protect the grill and stand from the weather. The full cover is not waterproof, but water resistant, so I wouldn't leave it out on an uncovered deck or patio.

Don't think about it too much. Just buy it and grill easy, fast, great-tasting food.

As the daylight lingers longer each day, the more carnivorous folk start salivating in anticipation. Barbecue season approaches, liberating meat lovers from the less-flavorful pan-fried steak or bland poached chicken breasts. Likewise, the vegetarians in the family rejoice in the prospect of grilled summer squash or roasted beets and corn, rather than settling for another head of iceberg lettuce and canned beans. For juicy burgers and veggie kabobs at home or at the lake, industry leader Weber offers their portable Q-100 gas grill. The propane grill employs an 8,500-BTU stainless-steel burner to heat its 189-square-inch cooking area.

Weber crafted the grill's lid and body in tough cast aluminum with a sturdy glass-reinforced nylon frame. The grill ignites at the push of a button for reliable lighting, and an infinitely adjustable burner valve with a high-quality regulator makes it easy to control the heat. Meat sizzles on the porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grates, while drippings follow the drip ducts to reduce potential flare-ups and enable quicker cleaning. Other highlights include a flavorizer system integrated into the cooking grate, a removable catch pan, and a large weather-resistant lid handle. The grill operates on a standard 14.1- or 16.4-ounce propane cylinder. Propane does not come included, but Weber does enclose a Weber Q cookbook of recipes and inspiration. The grill measures 16 by 27 by 23-1/2 inches with the lid open and carries a five-year limited warranty. --Jessica Reuling
